City Living in Small Spaces

How's your week going so far? Hope all is well!

I'm not sure how it is where you live, but Vancouver is a city of condos so I end up shooting a lot of "small space" stories. Thought I'd share one with you.

Last summer I had the pleasure of working with Christine Hanlon, from Style At Home, on a week of shoots. This condo was one of the shoots, and it's featured in the new issue. This compact one bedroom condo is owned by a young woman and was designed with the help of Karla Amadatsu of Kerrisdale Design. This space is very paired down, and very orderly, which is the trick with tiny spaces where everything is on view. I can't seem to do that myself...too much stuff!

I love seeing how people live with their "stuff" - paired down, hidden, or on display. How do you live with your "stuff"?

Back on Friday with mapley good treat. Have a lovely day!

Baked on Monday - Lemon Hazelnut Loaf

Hope a lovely weekend was had by all. I just got back from a very quick trip to Toronto. I'd been nominated for a couple of National Magazine Awards for stories I shot for Style At Home. My decision to go was at the last minute. Didn't win, but it was so much fun....and it really was nice just to be nominated. I think I'm finally sober now ;)

I woke up craving this delicious lemon hazelnut loaf. It's baking as I type. Instead of making one loaf, I've used mini pans to make six of them. Looks way cuter as well!

Lemon Hazelnut Loaf (or loaves!)
makes one large loaf or six small

125g butter, softened
1 cup berry sugar (a.k.a. caster or super fine)
plus 1/4 cup extra sugar (for lemon syrup)
2 eggs
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 cup milk
1/4 chopped hazelnuts
Grated rind and juice of a large lemon (or 2 small lemons)

Preheat oven to 350f/180c. Grease one large loaf tin or six small tins.

Cream butter well, then add sugar and beat again. Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Add sifted flour and salt, and milk, alternatively. Add hazelnuts and lemon rind. Pour batter into one large tin or divide evenly into six small tins. If using large tin bake for about 40-45 minutes. Bake 25 minutes if using small tins.

For lemon syrup, combine lemon juice and remaining sugar in a small saucepan. Stir over low heat until sugar is dissolved.  Pour syrup over loaf while still hot. Let cool in tin. Enjoy!!

Style, and a cute family, at home

I shot this pretty, yet modern, home for Style at Home a few months ago along with Kate, Heather and Peter. It's featured in the current issue on news stands now. The house certainly was lovely but to me, it was all about the family that lives there. It's so nice to work with humans and not just a collection of rooms. Amir, Laura, Chloe and Charlotte added even more energy and "oomph" to the shoot. Little Chloe, was a sweetie and very cooperative for a 3 year old. Gotta love that happy hair of hers!

Back to the rooms. They were pretty fantastic. A nice mix of pretty and modern. I tend to lean more towards the modern, myself. Loved the kitchen and the beautiful light fixture over the dining table.

That's it for today. Have a lovely day bloggers!
