Vancouver Neighbourhoods

How's your week going? If you're in Vancouver, do you have a voice left after the game last night? 4 more to go!

I shot a story, for Sunset Magazine, about one of my favourite neighbourhoods in Vancouver - Gastown. It's actually in the June issue, which is out now. It does have a touristy side, but it also has some of the best shops and restaurants in the city. Here are a few of the places I shot for the story.

Meat And Bread is a very popular lunch spot. Arrive at door opening, as the line-ups are long!

The Diamond is a fantastic "cocktail parlour". Josh made a real cocktail and I drank it after I shot it. Lesson learned. Don't drink on an empty stomach while shooting a story. ;)

L'Abbitoir is a great little restaurant that was Vancouver's first jail in the 19th century. Love that. It's a busy place, so reservations are recommended.

That's my mini tour of Gastown! Definitely check it out next time you find yourself in Vancouver.

Have a great day! Back soon.

Hey Janis, what a great perspective on your special pocket of the world.

I visited Gas Town aeons ago when visiting Canada with my family as a teenager. Obviously I wasn't going to be allowed into the places that you've featured today so it was wonderful to have a virtual tour.

My parents are about to embark on a tour of the Northern Hemisphere tomorrow and will be in Canada for a week or so, perhaps they'll return to Vancouver - if so I have some insider tips on where to eat thanks to you. xx F

Thanks for the peek into your city - I have yet to visit. I laughed out loud at the drink on the job comment. When I am a wedding guest (with camera) you can see through the negs at which point the drinks hit. haha.
p.s. did you shoot the flatiron building with a tilt shift, or do that in post?

Beautiful! I love that Vancouver is surrounded by mountains. I was there for a few hours one summer, on my way to Whistler. Visiting from dm designs =)

Even more excuses to get into the city more often. I love the cane tile floor in L'Abbitoir!

Im obviously a quilter through and through as all I could see in that last photo was the gorgeous tiles on the floor, theres got to be a quilt in there! A long way to visit from Brisbane, Australia, but would love to one day (again... did make a fleeting visit when lived in Canada for a year on posting 16 years ago). Love your photos!

If I actually ever can convince myself that it is not dangerous to fly by aeroplane, I'll so try these locations out.
Thank you for the interesting Infos, your opinion as a local resident matters more to me than those tourist pamphlets! ❤

Also, fab photos...
